"There has been much sorrow here, a lot of suffering … things have been done that shouldn't have happened." That's what the psychic medium was saying on Summit avenue in the Griggs Mansion during a séance in February of 1969. Reporters from the St. Paul Pioneer-Press were there at the behest of the building's owner, Carl Weschcke, who himself had seen different apparitions wandering the halls. "The house has a heaviness about it — like a ball and chain." The reporters heard the squeaking of footsteps up the stairs when there was no one there as well as thumps and knocks on the wall that they couldn't explain. After they described their experience, they finished the article by saying "There is no prize on earth that could get us to spend a single night alone in that great stone house that seems to speak in sounds we cannot explain or understand."
